The great bulls painted deep in the Lascaux cave were made to be seen by firelight, and under a moving flame they move — flanks shifting, heads turning, a herd running seventeen thousand years without stopping. This is the oldest surviving worship of the animal on the human record. We have been drawing the bull in the dark since before we had cities. We are still doing it.
